CHBA-NL & Habitat for Humanity Partnership Strengthens #CdnBuilt Communities

For the past decade, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Newfoundland and Labrador (CHBA-NL) has collaborated with Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador (Habitat NL) to effect positive change in their community. Newfoundland’s First Tiny Home is one result of this partnership.

CHBA Newfoundland & Labrador partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build Newfoundland’s first tiny home! $10,000 was raised in ticket sales for a chance at winning this home & all proceeds went to supporting the non-profit!

In March 2016, just prior to the CHBA-NL 33rd Annual Home Show, CHBA-NL members teamed up with Habitat NL volunteers to build a tiny home in 24 hours. CHBA-NL members sponsored the entire on-site project, which was revealed to Home Show attendees.

The project demonstrated innovative approaches to construction in small living spaces, but more importantly, it was an opportunity to give back to the local community. Home Show attendees purchased $10 tickets for a chance to win the tiny home, and sales amounted to $10,000. All proceeds were donated directly to Habitat NL to help forward its goal of providing low income families with safe, decent, affordable homes.

Strengthening communities an ongoing commitment

CHBA members in Newfoundland and Labrador know that building strong communities is about more than building houses. They are continually looking for new way to give back, and to have fun while working towards a good cause.

CHBA-NL’s annual golf tournament members organized a putting contest and 50/50 raffle tickets, donating $2,000 to Habitat NL this year.

In November 2016, members collaborated with a local chocolatier at its annual Building Excellence and Residential Growth Awards. The chocolatier built chocolate homes for auction and $3,000 was raised for the charity.

CHBA-NL members have had an active place on the Habitat NL board of directors and have volunteered their time on Habitat NL builds since 2007, knowing just how much the charity does for its community.

In addition to their work with Habitat NL, every year CHBA-NL donates a $500 scholarship – The Jim Dunphy Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Newfoundland and Labrador Achievement Award – to the College of the North Atlantic. This scholarship helps support the skilled trades in the province and is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in a program related to the residential construction industry.
